Central Valley Christian High School baseball player Kelan Turner was voted by readers as the Visalia Times-Delta Tulare County prep athlete of the week.

In an online poll that closed on March 31, Turner received 9,605 votes, or a 47.5% majority, of the 20,252 responses.

Turner blasted a homer and knocked in three runs to help the Cavaliers defeat Hanford West 10-4. He finished with two hits and also scored a run.

Here are the choices for the week of March 27-31:

  • Taylor Hastin, softball, Tulare Union: Hastin had two hits, including a double, and RBI to lead the Tribe to a 4-3 win over Pioneer Valley.

  • Devin Ibarra, track and field, El Diamante: Ibarra won the 1,600- and 3,200-meter races at the Monarch Invitational. He was also a member of the 4x400-meter Miners' relay team that placed first.

  • Brandon Petty, baseball, El Diamante: Petty fired a complete-game shutout to direct the Miners to a 3-0 win over Monache in an East Yosemite League game. A starting pitcher, he hurled 11 strikeouts in seven innings and allowed only two hits. He also scored a run and drew a walk at the plate.

  • Eric Rico, baseball, Redwood: Rico went 3-for-4 hitting, including a double, and knocked in four runs as the Rangers defeated Porterville 8-0 in a doubleheader game. He also picked up a win as a pitcher in game one, firing nine strikeouts in six innings.

  • David Rodriguez, baseball, Golden West: Rodriguez hit a double and scored two runs as the Trailblazers edged Mt. Whitney 4-1 in game one of an EYL doubleheader.

  • Owen Thompson, baseball, Mission Oak: Thompson drove in three runs on two hits as the Hawks downed Tulare Union 15-7. He also scored a run.

  • Kelan Turner, baseball, Central Valley Christian: Turner blasted a homer and knocked in three runs to help the Cavaliers defeat Hanford West 10-4. He finished with two hits and also scored a run.

  • Jordan Versteeg, baseball, Mt. Whitney: Versteeg earned the win on the bump in game two of a doubleheader against Golden West, leading the Pioneers to 6-4 victory.

Nominations are based on information available to the Times-Delta.

All high school varsity players from Tulare County can be on the ballot. Nominations must be received for consideration by Monday morning following that week's games.
