Tulare County athlete of the week: Mt. Whitney's J.T. Guerrero

Mt. Whitney High School baseball player J.T. Guerrero was voted by readers as the Visalia Times-Delta Tulare County prep athlete of the week.

In an online poll that closed on March 24, Guerrero received 8,565 votes, or a 58% majority, of the 14,827 responses.

Guerrero threw a complete-game, no-hitter to lead the Pioneers to a 7-0 win over Porterville. He also had a single, a run and an RBI in the East Yosemite League victory.

Here are the choices for the week of March 20-24:

  • Ethan Arteaga, baseball, Tulare Western: Arteaga had a double and an RBI, including the game-winning RBI in the eighth inning. The Mustangs defeated Mission Oak 8-2 in an eight-inning game.

  • Daphnie Avila, track and field, Tulare Union: Avila placed first in the 100-meter dash and the 4x100-meter relay in a West Yosemite League tri-meet versus Hanford and Mission Oak.

  • Albert Ferreira, boys tennis, Mission Oak: Ferreira led the Hawks to a 7-2 win against Lemoore, posting a 6-4, 6-0 individual victory at No. 1 singles.

  • J.T. Guerrero, baseball, Mt. Whitney: Guerrero threw a complete-game, no-hitter to lead the Pioneers to a 7-0 win over Porterville. He also had a single, a run and an RBI in the East Yosemite League victory.

  • Caleb Noeske, track and field, Central Valley Christian: Noeske placed first in the discus and shotput in a tri-meet against Exeter and Mt. Whitney.

  • Joey Rico, baseball, Redwood: Rico hit two home runs, knocked in five, and scored a pair of runs. He also appeared as a relief pitcher and finished with two strikeouts in one frame.

  • Nick Simon, baseball, Golden West: Simon went 3-for-4 hitting with a home run as the Trailblazers defeated Monache 9-3 in the EYL game.

Nominations are based on information available to the Times-Delta.

All high school varsity players from Tulare County can be on the ballot. Nominations must be received for consideration by Monday morning following that week's games.
