Tulare County athlete of the week: El Diamante's Trevor Hampel

El Diamante High School baseball player Trevor Hampel was voted by readers as the Visalia Times-Delta Tulare County prep athlete of the week.

In an online poll that closed on March 10, Hampel received 3,394 votes, or a 49.2% majority, of the 6,920 responses.

Hampel fired a complete-game shutout to lead the Miners to a win over San Joaquin Memorial. He finished with three strikeouts.

Here are the choices for the week of Feb. 27 to March 3:

  • Bailey Brown, baseball, Lindsay: Brown hurled seven strikeouts in four scoreless innings to pilot the Cardinals to a win versus Orosi. He also had two hits and a pair of RBI.

  • Micky Downs, baseball, Golden West: Downs hit a walk-off single and drove in two runs to direct the Trailblazers to a victory over Justin Garza.

  • Drew Gonzales, baseball, Tulare Western: Gonzales knocked in the game-winning run as the Mustangs downed Clovis West.

  • Trevor Hampel, baseball, El Diamante: Hampel fired a complete-game shutout to lead the Miners to a win over San Joaquin Memorial. He finished with three strikeouts.

  • Mason Hatton, girls basketball, Tulare Union: Hatton scored 10 points and had four steals in the Tribe's state playoff game against Bret Harte.

  • Shelby Somavia, softball, Redwood: Somavia hit a home run and two doubles and racked up three RBI in a game against Kingsburg. She also scored two runs.

Nominations are based on information available to the Times-Delta.

All high school varsity players from Tulare County are eligible to be on the ballot. Nominations must be received for consideration by Monday morning following that week's games.
