Update: Athlete of the week, Mt. Whitney's Eric Gajdusek

Mt. Whitney High School track and field athlete Eric Gajdusek was voted by readers as the Visalia Times-Delta Tulare County prep athlete of the week.

In an online poll that closed on May 13, Gajdusek received 1,465 votes, or a 18% majority, of the 8,194 responses. The Pioneer won by 62 votes.

Gajdusek is the 2022 West Yosemite League champion in the 110- and 300-meter hurdles.

Editor's note: Anyone can nominate an athlete of the week for every sport. Nominate next week's ballot through email. Readers can email nominations to sports reporter Vongni Yang at vyang2@gannett.com. Please include a player's statistics and a photo if possible.

All high school varsity players from Tulare County are eligible to be placed on the ballot. Nominations must be received by Monday morning following that week's games for consideration.

Here are the choices for the week of May 2-7:

  • Ella Bettencourt, girls swimming, Central Valley Christian. Bettencourt captured the individual 2022 Central Section Division I title in the 100-yard backstroke.

  • Jaden Castillo, boys diving, El Diamante. Castillo claimed the 2022 Central Section Division II diving title.

  • Jennah Creason, girls track and field, Redwood. Creason won the individual 2022 West Yosemite League championships in the shot put and discus throws.

  • Eric Gajdusek, boys track and field, Mt. Whitney. Gajdusek is the WYL champion in the 110- and 300-meter hurdles.

  • Gage Hastin, baseball, Mission Oak. Hastin fired 13 strikeouts in a complete-game effort to glide the Hawks to a win over Tulare Union.

  • Ava Olson, girls swimming, Tulare Union. Olson brought home an individual 2022 Central Section Division II title, placing first in the girls 200-yard individual medley.

  • Aidan Robertson, baseball, Exeter. Robertson tossed nine strikeouts in a complete game to pilot the Monarchs to a win over Selma.

  • Nicole Tristao, girls swimming, Tulare Western. The East Yosemite League champion in the 200-yard freestyle and 200-yard individual medley, she competed in both events at the 2022 Central Section Division II championship meet.

Anyone (coaches, parents, teammates, teachers, friends, etc.) can nominate an athlete of the week for every sport.

Nominations are based on information made available to the Times-Delta. Please include statistics and a photo with your submission.
