With voter registration deadline looming, interest in midterm election continues to grow
With almost two weeks until Election Day 2022, the deadline to register to vote is on Monday, October 24, and the last day to request a mail-in ballot is November 1. Voter turnout is expected to be relatively high, compared to other midterms, and that’s likely to include higher numbers for young voters.
Here in Pennsylvania, all eyes are on several key races.
“The [Doug] Mastriano one, obviously, against [Josh] Shapiro. That was the main one I’ve been looking at,” said voter Mary Howski.
The entire nation is paying attention to the U.S. Senate race between John Fetterman and Dr. Mehmet Oz, with voter interest reaching an all-time high for a midterm election. A new NBC poll reports 57 percent of registered voters said this midterm cycle is more important than past ones. Additionally, experts believe that young voter turnout could reach 2018 levels, when a record-high 36 percent of all eligible voters aged 18 to 29 cast ballots in the midterm election, according to NBC news.
“I’ve been planning on registering, I just haven’t gotten there yet,” said Shannon Zelinsky, a student at the University of Pittsburgh.
Channel 11 asked young voters what issues are important to them.
“As a female identifying [as] human being – abortion,” Zelinsky said.
“Race relations are very important to me as well, as well as healthcare costs and student loans,” said Lilyana Acharya, a sophomore at Pitt.
Several voters told Channel 11 that even one vote can make a huge impact.
“If everyone thought that way and became a nihilist about it, then really nothing would happen because in voting, even though each contribution is only one person at large, the whole difference that it makes is bigger than some of its parts, so everyone counts here, really,” Acharya said.
To register to vote, you must be a citizen of the U.S., a resident of Pennsylvania, and live in your election district for at least 30 days prior to the election, and you must be at least 18 years old on Election Day.
