Voter registration deadline is Tuesday for Nov. 7 local elections in Vero Beach, Sebastian

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — The deadline is Tuesday to vote in the Nov. 7 Sebastian and Vero Beach city council elections.

The deadline applies only to new voters. Registered voters who need to update information are exempt from the upcoming deadline.

"It is very disheartening that municipal elections typically have a very low voter turnout," said Leslie Rossway Swan, Indian River County supervisor of elections, in an interview. "These elections have the most local effect. They are what directly affects the citizens residing within those municipalities.

"The policies that the people who are elected during these elections on a local level are going to affect the residents in their day to day lives," Swan said.

Who is running?

Vying for three seats on the Sebastian City Council are Damien H. Gilliams; Damien L. Gilliams; Fred Jones, the current mayor; Sherrie Matthews; Bob McPartlan, an incumbent; and Christopher Nunn, current vice mayor.

Running for the two open Vero Beach City Council seats are John Cotugno, the current mayor; Honey Minuse; and Taylor Dingle.
