Control of Congress and the future of President Joe Biden’s agenda are at stake in Tuesday’s midterm elections as voters decided races for the House and Senate along with dozens of governorships and key local election posts.

NORTH CAROLINA
At the top of the ticket is the U.S. Senate race. Both candidates are hoping to fill the seat of Republican U.S. senator Richard Burr, who announced his retirement back in 2016.
Congressman Ted Budd is the Republican candidate. Right now, he represents the state’s 13th District, which includes parts of Iredell and Rowan counties.
Cheri Beasley is the Democratic candidate. She was the the first Black woman to serve as chief justice of the state’s supreme court.
Other key North Carolina races: Congress, the State House, the State Senate, Mecklenburg County Commission, the CMS Board, and the City of Charlotte Bonds. Each race is highlighted in the Channel 9′s General Election candidate guides.

SOUTH CAROLINA
Incumbent Henry McMaster is facing Democrat Joe Cunningham, a former Congressman from Charleston. McMaster, a Republican, touts his past four years of work when making his pitch to voters while Cunningham, the Democrat in the race, says residents are ready for a change.

FOCUS: BALANCE OF POWER
The Beasley-Budd race is one of a handful across the country that will determine the balance of power in Congress. Democrats now have control of the House and Senate, but that could change after this midterm cycle.
On the campaign trail, President Joe Biden has pointed to Democratic successes, including the passage of the more than $1 trillion infrastructure bill and student loan debt relief. Meanwhile, Rep. Kevin McCarthy, the top house Republican, says they’re looking to cut spending, secure the border and tackle inflation.
