Voters to decide on fate of Fairfield County District Library levy on Election Day

LANCASTER − The Fairfield County District Library will ask voters to approve a 0.5 mills replacement levy on Nov. 7.

The levy was last replaced in 2013 and is about a third of the library's annual $4 million budget.

"We're using it for general library operations," library director Rebecca Schaade said. "We use it for everything from purchasing materials, staffing, for programs, building maintenance and everything in our general operating fund."

The levy money funds all of the library district's branches. Schaade said she's optimistic voters will pass the levy.

"We've got very good local support," she said. "And we're hopeful, of course, that this will pass. But if it did not, we do have a couple of opportunities to go back on the ballot or a little bit of time to figure it out and get input from our customers and trustees to decide what we are going to to do."

Here is the official ballot wording of the levy request:

A replacement of a tax for the benefit of Fairfield County District Library for the purpose of current expenses that the county auditor estimates will collect $1,875,000 annually, at a rate not exceeding 0.5 mills for each $1 of taxable value, which amounts to $17.50 for each $100,000 of the county auditor's appraised value, for 10 years, commencing in 2024, first due in calendar year 2025.
