Voters in the three Coast counties returned four incumbent Senators and four House incumbents to the Mississippi Legislature for four more years, with a fourth incumbent senator leading in his race.

But 17 legislators from the three Coast counties, 15 of whom are Republicans, ran without opposition in the general election. Only one of the eight contested races featured a Republican and Democratic candidate, the race for House District 121 in Harrison County.

The Associated Press noted the trends statewide in a recent article, reporting: “More than four-fifths of Mississippi’s legislative candidates will have no major-party opposition in the Nov. 7 general election. And more than half of this year’s winners will have faced no other Republicans or Democrats in either the primary or the general election.”
