Voting in Tuesday’s primary elections? Here’s what you should know.

Virginia’s primary elections are Tuesday, June 21.

Voters will elect their party’s nominees for two U.S. congressional seats that represent portions of Hampton Roads, and the winners will move on to the general election in November.

Here’s what Virginians should know about how to cast their ballots.

Polling hours

Polling stations are open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Voters can cast ballots as long as they are in line by 7 p.m.

Voter registration

The deadline to register to vote or update an existing registration was May 31. Virginians can check their status at vote.elections.virginia.gov/VoterInformation.

Where to vote

Polling locations are printed on voter registration cards. Voters can also look up their polling place online at https://vote.elections.virginia.gov/VoterInformation.

What to bring

Registered voters are required to bring some form of identification or sign an ID confirmation statement.

Some acceptable forms of identification include a Virginia driver’s license, a Virginia DMV-issued identification card or a valid U.S. passport. For a full list of approved identification documents, visit elections.virginia.gov/voterID.

Curbside voting

Voters with a disability, or who are age 65 or older, have the right to have a ballot brought to their vehicle for curbside voting. To vote curbside, park in a designated parking space at the polling location and follow the instructions on the signs.

Mail-in and absentee ballots

Absentee ballots can be dropped off to the registrar’s office by 7 p.m. on Election Day. Absentee ballots returned by mail must be postmarked on or before Election Day and received by the registrar by noon on the third day after the election.

A witness signature is required on all mail-in ballots. If a ballot is missing a witness signature, the voter will be contacted within three days of receipt by the local voter registration office and asked to correct it.

The ballot must be corrected by noon on Friday, June 24, in order to be counted.

Problems at the polls

Voters who believe they meet all the requirements but are still not being permitted to vote can ask an election official to contact the voter registrar’s office about their situation before they leave the polling station.

The registrar may be able to resolve the problem immediately. But those who are not satisfied with the outcome should call the Virginia Department of Elections at 800-552-9745 as soon as possible, preferably before the polls close.
