VSP: 20-year-old killed in Tazewell Co. DUI crash

TAZEWELL COUNTY, Va. (WJHL) – One passenger was seriously injured and another killed in a crash in Tazewell County last month.

According to the Virginia State Police (VSP), the single-vehicle crash occurred on Jan. 14 on Route 460.

State police report that at 12:19 a.m., a 2014 TC Scion heading west went off the road and struck a guardrail. The vehicle then crossed back over the roadway and hit an embankment.

The Scion was occupied by the driver and three passengers, according to VSP.

One of the backseat passengers was identified as Allen Smith, 20, of Richlands, Virginia. Smith was reportedly ejected from the Scion and died due to his injuries on Feb. 2. He had not been wearing a seatbelt, VSP stated.

A second backseat passenger who was wearing a seatbelt was seriously injured. State police identified that passenger only as a 16-year-old male.

According to VSP, the third passenger was not injured.

State police reported the driver, Michael Meadows, 29, of Cedar Bluff, received minor injuries in the crash. Meadows was charged with driving under the influence.

As of Monday, the crash remains under investigation.
