VSP: Dives fail to turn up new evidence in 1980s homicides

YORK COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) — Divers following up on new information unveiled last month concerning a trio of 1980s homicides did not turn up new evidence, Virginia State Police said Tuesday.

Virginia State Police search and recovery team divers, with help from Chesapeake, Hampton and Suffolk police, and the Virginia Marine Resources Commission, took exploratory dives in waters near the Colonial Parkway in York County.

State Police said the dives were in response to ongoing construction along the parkway, and to follow up on new information from investigators since January’s announcement about an Isle of Wight County double homicide and a Hampton homicide from the 1980s.

Investigators, using forensic evidence, declared Alan Wilmer Sr. as the person responsible for a Sept. 1987 sexual assault and double homicide in Isle of Wight County, and a July 1989 sexual assault and homicide in Hampton.

State Police said they, along with Hampton Police and the FBI Norfolk field office, continue to pursue all investigative leads, especially on the new information unveiled since January.

VSP said it is asking anyone with information related to Wilmer Sr. and/or the crimes connected to him and/or the Colonial Parkway double homicides to come forward and contact the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI or submit a tip online. Anyone with information can also reach out to Virginia State Police, or Hampton Police via the Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.
