DOOMS — Virginia State Police said a Waynesboro man was killed in a crash Thursday afternoon in Dooms, according to a press release.

The fatal crash took place on East Side Highway just north of Brown's Lane, police said.

Derek O. Zayas, 20, was on a 2001 Suzuki motorcycle and headed south on East Side Highway when he lost control of the bike and laid it down in the roadway, police said. Zayas became separated from the motorcycle and slid into the northbound lanes, where he was struck by a 2011 Chevrolet Tahoe.

Zayas was taken to the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville. Police said he died Thursday night.

The driver of the Tahoe, a 72-year-old Elkton man, was not injured in the crash.

The fatality remains under investigation.
