Yahoo Autos VW ID.4 1st Edition Is Already Sold Out, but You Can Still Get One in 2021
It didn't take long for the Volkswagen ID.4 1st Edition, just 2,000 of which were offered to buyers in the U.S., to be swept off digital shelves as the number of reservations reached its limit. This means the special launch trim of the first ID-branded electric Volkswagen crossover sold out in just a few hours after reservations opened for the model, the first deliveries of which are slated for the first quarter of 2021.
The long-awaited ID.4 is the first of the MEB-platform Volkswagens to land stateside, just weeks after the Golf-sized ID.3 hatch went on sale in Europe, and it's the culmination of a five-year effort by Volkswagen to create a new platform for a range of battery-electric models, which also include an MPV styled after the classic Volkswagen bus. The ID.4 crossover went first, targeting a segment expected to become very popular over the next couple of years, and one that has been filled just by the Tesla Model Y until now.
The 1st Edition ID.4 is a special, limited-edition launch trim of the crossover, and features a black-painted roof, 20-inch alloy wheels, premium LED headlights, an illuminated grille, panoramic fixed glass roof, white interior accents and 1st Edition badging throughout. With a 250-mile range, this model starts at $45,190 ($43,995 before destination charges and before the application of the $7,500 federal incentive).
"The ID.4 was engineered, loaded and priced to win the hearts of SUV owners who are simply ready to go electric—and fall in love with Volkswagen again,” said Scott Keogh, CEO of Volkswagen Group of America. “It drives like a GTI, it has the packaging of a Tiguan and the purpose of the Beetle. All the best things about VW in one package."
While the 1st Edition is sold out, the model still on the menu is the ID.4 in Pro trim, offering the same 250-mile range, a 201-hp motor driving the rear wheels, a glass panoramic roof, LED headlights and taillights, 19-inch five-spoke wheels, illuminated door handles, grille and logo, rain-sensing wipers, heated mirrors, and other amenities as standard equipment. A number of optional packages can be added with even more premium features. The ID.4 Pro starts at $39,995, before destination charges and the application of federal and local EV incentives, and will begin shipping by mid-2021. That's right: Delivery will be several long months away (and one short month, February of course) for ID.4 buyers now that reservations for the 1st Edition have filled up. Other ID.4 variants are expected to land stateside during the product cycle of the model, so these are by no means the only flavors of the electric crossover that will be available.
