W.D.M. Valley wins girls state golf crown, Bettendorf's Vogler repeats as individual champ

The West Des Moines Valley girls golf program added another team title to its trophy case.

The Tigers used a strong final round to seize the Class 4A state team championship on Friday afternoon at Otter Creek Golf Course in Ankeny. It is the 13th team title all-time for the Valley girls golf team, and the third in the last four years.

Valley carded a two-day total of 637 to beat Pleasant Valley for the second consecutive year. The Tigers and Spartans were tied at 325 after Thursday's opening round, but Valley shot 312 in Friday's second round to beat Pleasant Valley by 19 shots.

It was a collective team effort for the Tigers, who picked up 13 shots between Thursday and Friday.

Hallie Yates shot 79 on Thursday, then 72 on Friday to finish fourth overall at 9-over (151). She was joined in the top-10 by Saffire Sayre, who finished tied for eighth at 14-over (156). Kayla Moline shot 81 on Thursday, then 79 on Friday to tie for 13th at 18-over. Shanel Sayre went from 90 on Thursday to 81 on Friday to tie for 22nd overall.

That team depth was too much for Pleasant Valley, which kept pace with the Tigers on Thursday but couldn't match their play on Friday and finished at 656. Marshalltown took third at 665, followed by Cedar Falls (686) and Western Dubuque (691).

While Valley cruised to a team championship, the individual state title needed a playoff to decide the winner.

After 36 holes over two days, Bettendorf's Shannyn Vogler and Marshalltown's Amber Henson were tied at 1-over (143). Vogler followed her 1-over 72 on Thursday with an even-par 71 on Friday. Hensen trailed by one shot after Thursday's first round, then recorded four birdies and carded a 1-under 70 on Friday to force a playoff.

On the playoff hole — Otter Creek's No. 15, a 131-yard Par-3 — Vogler made birdie to win and become a two-time state champion. It was a spectacular ending to an incredible golf career. Vogler, a future Hawkeye, took second as a freshman in 2019, lost her sophomore season to COVID-19, then won back-to-back titles in 2021 and 2022.

Vogler is the first repeat champ in Iowa's large girls golf class since Ames' Katie Purcell won in both 2009 and 2010. Iowa City Liberty's Isabella Petersen took third, followed by  Valley's Yates in fourth and a three-way tie for fifth between Pleasant Valley's Maura Peters, Linn-Mar's Morgan Rupp, and Western Dubuque's McKenna Stackis.

Clear Lake rallies to defeat Gilbert, win Class 3A team title

The Class 3A girls golf state championships, contested at River Valley Golf Course in Adel, featured a furious day two rally in the team race and three playoff holes to decide the individual champion.

Clear Lake rallied from 12 shots back to beat Gilbert and win the team championship. The Lions shot 713 total — 360 on Thursday, 353 on Friday — to outlast the Tigers, who led after a 348 on Thursday, but carded a 368 on Friday to finish second at 716. Clear Lake has now won three team titles in girls golf, the others coming in 2010 and 2012.

The individual title came down to the third playoff hole, between Newton's Rylee Heryford and Gilbert's Eden Lohrbach. The two shot identical scores of 149 — both shot 75 on Thursday, then 74 on Friday — and Heryford emerged victorious after three playoff holes. She is the first Newton girls golfer to win an individual state title.

Chloe Bolte wins individual title, leads Sumner-Fredericksburg to 2A team title

Chloe Bolte became the first Sumner-Fredericksburg girls golfer to win an individual state golf title on Friday, and in doing so, she led the Cougars girls golf team to just their second team championship in school history.

Bolte, a freshman, defeated Columbus Catholic's Molly Fereday in a one-hole playoff to win the individual title on Friday at Pheasant Ridge Golf Course in Cedar Falls. Bolte and Fereday both shot 149 after 36 holes, then Bolte made par on the Par-4 18th to seize the individual title, the first in school history.

Bolte was one of three Sumner-Fredericksburg golfers to finish inside the top-20 on the individual leaderboard, powering the Cougars from 9 shots down after Thursday to a 9-shot team victory on Friday. It is the second team title in school history for Sumner-Fredericksburg, the first coming in 2006.

Sumner-Fredericksburg carded a two-day score of 703 — 357 on Thursday, 346 on Friday — to rally and defeat New Hampton, the runners-up at 712 (348 Thursday, 364 Friday). Behind Bolte, Morgan Brandt shot 93 on Thursday then 85 on Friday to finish 18th while Katie Reno shot 92-90 to finish 19th overall, lifting the Cougars to first.

Smock, Bishop Garrigan cruise to 1A golf titles

Lynnville-Sully senior Greenlee Smock turned a 6-shot lead after Thursday's opening round into a 9-shot victory after Friday's final round at the Class 1A state golf championships at Marshalltown's American Legion Golf Course.

Smock, now a two-time 1A state champ, carded a two-day score of 154 to finish 12-over par. Sigourney's Madelynn Hornback took second at 163 (21-over). Grundy Center's Abbie Lindamen and New London's Taylor Phillips tied for third at 166 (24-over).

Bishop Garrigan cruised to the team title, totaling a two-day score of 713. It is their second straight team title, third in four years and 10th in school history, all of which have come since 2004. Grundy Center took second (739), followed by Central Lyon (757).
