W&M extends enrollment confirmation deadline for class of ’28

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (WAVY) — Over concerns of a delay in the availability of financial aid data for applicants, William & Mary has extended its enrollment confirmation deadline by two weeks for first-year students admitted through the regular decision process this spring.

The college has extended its enrollment confirmation deadline from May 1 to May 15 due to concerns of a delay in the availability of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA, applicant data.

“Our focus is on supporting students,” said William & Mary Associate Vice President for Enrollment and Dean of Admission Tim Wolfe in a statement. “In this unprecedented situation, it’s become apparent this means providing additional flexibility by moving back the enrollment confirmation deadline to give students the time they need to receive and consider financial aid packages.”

The U.S. Department of Education had recently unveiled a revised FAFSA, simplifying the application process, but due to launch delays, it will prevent William & Mary from getting student data by several months, resulting in slowdowns in the process of providing students with complete financial aid package information.

Old Dominion University recently extended admissions deposit and housing deadlines for all first-year students for the same reason. The new early action deadline is now May 28, and time-slot notifications will be emailed by May 31. The admission deposit deadline has been extended until June 1.

“We are committed to meeting students and parents where they are in their college decision-making journey by extending the time needed to make an informed choice,” said Ashley Miller, ODU associate vice president for enrollment management, in a statement. “ODU prides itself on providing a welcoming and supportive environment for all new Monarchs, including unparalleled orientation experiences to support the new student transition immediately following Admitted Students Day on April 6, 2024.”

The self-selection process will take place from June 4-30, and students may cancel housing reservations at no cost until June 15.

Wolfe said William & Mary is committed to meeting 100% of the demonstrated financial need for in-state residents. As part of that commitment, admitted in-state, Pell-eligible students will get scholarship help to cover at least tuition and fees.

William & Mary also asks applicants to submit a CSS Profile to apply for institutional aid, which helps the university’s Office of Financial Aid get a head start on putting a financial aid package together, even if FAFSA data is not yet available.

Wolfe said once it gets FAFSA applicant data, the college’s financial aid office will let students know about financial aid packages as soon as possible.

“We have a talented staff of dedicated financial aid professionals and colleagues across campus committed to supporting our students,” Wolfe said. “They are ready to make necessary adjustments and I appreciate all they will do to help us welcome the W&M Class of 2028.”
