WA apple scholarship awardees include 33 locals

Jun. 9—WENATCHEE — Five students from Adams County and 28 from Grant County are among the 318 recipients of scholarships awarded this year by the Washington Apple Foundation, according to a press release.

According to the press release, the foundation is giving out over $1 million in new and renewed scholarships to students whose families have ties to the growing, harvesting and packing of apples, pears and cherries, with most employed in orchards and packing houses.

All five Adams County recipients are Othello High School graduates: Angelica Hernandez, Gabriela Rodriguez-Garcilazo, Jennifer Hernandez Serna, Jose Policarpio and Yessica Maldonado.

Grant County recipients were drawn from a number of the county's high schools.

* Wahluke High School: Adilene Sandoval, Jasmine Rodriguez-Lara, Karen Arellano-Cruz, Karina Cruz, Sandra Rivera.

* Royal High School: Aldo Farias Ramos, Brynn Christensen, Diana Hernandez, Francisco Martinez, Isabel Corona-Campiz, Jacky Mejia, Maria Armengol.

* Warden High School: Alonda Rodriguez Luna, Charley Wilkinson.

* Ephrata High School: Antonio Isadoria, Jerry Torres, Madalyn Adams.

* Quincy High School: Blanca Mejia, Ivan Moreno, Jaelyn Zuniga-Diaz, Nora Medina. Oswaldo Perez, Silvia Esparza, Victor Garibay-Alejandre.

* Moses Lake High School: Citlalli Guzman, Ruby Mena Reyes.

* Odessa High School: Colton Messer.

* Big Bend Community College: Olivia Ramirez.

The foundation press release noted that 84% of scholarship recipients graduate from college or university in four years or less, and that 78% of the recipients are the first in their families to go to college.
