WA State Patrol releases more information about Monday night rollover crash near Tumwater

The Washington State Patrol has released more information about a rollover crash on I-5 Monday night near Tumwater, including that the incident slowed traffic for nine hours.

About 10:30 p.m., a 62-year-old man from Washougal, Washington, was driving north in a semi-trailer. Troopers say he crashed into the freeway barrier to his left, which caused the vehicle to roll onto its side.

Troopers say the Washougal man was driving too fast for the conditions.

The vehicle blocked all northbound lanes, plus the cargo he was hauling spilled across all southbound lanes and blocked them, too, according to State Patrol.

The driver was not hurt.

The road was blocked for eight hours and 59 minutes, partly because the spilled cargo needed to be checked as to whether it was hazardous. It was not, according to Trooper John Dattilo.

The road reopened about 7:30 a.m. Tuesday. During the closure, traffic was detoured to U.S. Hwy. 101.
