Facing mentor shortage, Big Brothers Big Sisters launches ‘It Takes Little to be Big’ campaign

Big Brothers Big Sisters WI Shoreline, in partnership with the national BBBS organization, is launching “It Takes Little to be Big,” a national campaign with the goal of engaging 1 million alumni, potential volunteer mentors and donors across the country to get involved and invest in the BBBS mission.

In Sheboygan and Manitowoc counties, the mentor shortage is felt by 176 children on a waitlist for mentors.

As an example of the long wait children face, the organization said Mason, its longest waiting little, is now 14 but has been on the waitlist since he was 9.

Among potential mentors, time is the biggest concern to getting involved, but the organization said even the smallest commitment can have an impact. Most Bigs report spending about 4 hours a month with their Little, BBBS said.

Anyone interested in becoming a mentor can connect with the organization at bbbswishoreline.org or by calling 920-458-0111.

Sheboygan Friends of the Poor Walk coming up Sept. 30

St. Vincent de Paul Sheboygan will hold its 15th Friends of the Poor Walk Sept. 30.

The 2-mile walk/run will start with a blessing at 9:45 a.m. followed by the walk/run at 10 a.m. at Firehouse Park, 3805 County Y, town of Sheboygan. Also included will be food, door prizes and T-shirt giveaway.

The event is held rain or shine. Cost is $5 for children, $20 for adults, $40 for families and $60 for teams of four. Sponsorships are also sought.

Kathleen Dineen-Grube, St. Vincent de Paul Sheboygan Council administrator, and Randal Shinn, St. Vincent de Paul Sheboygan assistant manager, said in a letter: “For the past fourteen years, the Friends of the Poor Walk has raised awareness to the challenges faced by our neighbors in need, especially the children of Sheboygan County. The Walk generates significant funds for use in direct service to those children living in need by raising funds, used by our SVdP programs, for shoes, winter apparel, and beds. We are happy to orchestrate and bring back the outdoor 2 mile walk this year! With your generous support as a donor and/or sponsor, many children in Sheboygan County will have more of their basic needs met – a bed, coats and shoes.”
