Wadley's first July 4th official celebration to be annual

Wadley Mayor Harold Moore said Monday, July 4, he plans to hold a July 4th celebration each year with 2023's to be more like a festival.

This year, the event was held at the city's football field where vendors, food, music, free rides and fireworks created fun for city residents.

"We all come together. There were no problems. I felt safe with the police here," said Antonio "Triple A" Greene, an attendee.

Tekisha Hagans of Wadley said she had had a "very good time. I would like to thank the mayor and the city for a great family oriented event."

"I think it's good," said Councilman John Maye who attended the event.

"Everybody seems to be all right. Nobody was overlooked," he said, adding the council made sure there was something for everyone.

City Administrator Dwayne Flowers said sponsors helped cover the event cost, which was about $12,500, including the fireworks. Sponsors were Battle Lumber, Zora Allen, Fulghum, Wadley Family Dental, FCS Printers, China One, Cooper Machine, Queensborough, LA Brett & Sons and Sumner Brothers.

There was a water slide, two free rides for kids and two bouncy houses. There was also hot dogs, soft drinks, popcorn, water and cotton candy.

A place was set aside for seniors with several rows of chairs under a tent and a large fan to provide some cool air. Trays of sandwiches, cookies and fruit, along with soft drinks, were brought to the tent and offered to the seniors at no cost.

"I am proud of our town for having its own fireworks. I'm looking forward to next year," said Cathy Mitchell from Wadley. Mitchell was a Paparazzi Accessories vendor with a display of jewelry. "We love our mayor," she said.

Another vendor, Joan Moss, is from Wrens. She sells leather belts, key chains and welcome signs. She tries to catch all the local vendor opportunities.

"I know Wadley always does things for the community," she said.
