Waffling weekly COVID data for Berks moves in positive direction

Sep. 23—Berks County's COVID data have been fluctuating from week to week.

One week the numbers tick up, and the next they dip back down. So it stands to reason that after seeing case numbers, deaths and hospitalization's rise last week the county would likely see them fall back down this week.

And that's exactly what data updates from the state Department of Health show.

Cases

The number of new COVID cases and reinfections in Berks dropped by more than 100 in the state's Wednesday update of its COVD dashboard.

The county had 666 new cases and reinfections, compared to 778 reported last week. While the county's number dropped, it did not fall into the range of the 614 that were reported two weeks ago.

The county's COVID cases per 100,000 residents was also down from data reported last week. The state's Early Warning Monitoring Dashboard showed that between Sept. 14 and 20 the county had a case rate of 96 per 100,000 people. Last week the rate was 109 per 100,000 people.

The positivity rate of 14.5% in Berks was down nearly 3 percentage points from the rate reported last week.

Overall, Berks has had 116,560 COVID cases during the pandemic.

Statewide, this week's data showed 102 COVID cases per 100,000 people and a positivity rate of 14.3%. The case rate was down from numbers reported last week, while the positivity rate was down by more than a percentage point.

There have been 3,239,298 COVID cases in the state during the pandemic, with 18,981 new cases and reinfections added in Wednesday's data update.

Deaths

The state, which reports the number of Berks residents to die no matter where the deaths take place, reported this week that a total of 1,662 county residents have died of COVID. That's an increase of three from data reported last week.

The Berks coroner's office, which reports COVID deaths that take place in the county, reported the county has had 1,504 COVID deaths in its weekly report issued Tuesday.

The coroner's report added three deaths to the county's total.

Statewide, a total of 47,098 people have died of COVID, an increase of 128 from data reported last week.

Hospitalizations

Hospitalizations of COVID patients in Berks remained at an elevated level in this week's data update.

According to state data released Wednesday, there were 43 hospitalized patients in the county. That's down four from the previous week.

Of the hospitalized patients, four were in intensive care and six were on ventilators. Both of those numbers are up from data reported last week.

Statewide there were 1,146 COVID patients hospitalized, down 25 from the number that was reported last week.
