Wagatha Christie trial: Why isn't it on today?

The Wagatha Christie libel trial is on adjournment until Thursday, 19 May.

Rebekah Vardy and Coleen Rooney have been given a day off from attending the Royal Courts of Justice in London while their legal teams prepare to give their closing speeches. This means there is no hearing on Wednesday, 18 May.

The Wagatha Christie trial will reopen on Thursday with lawyers for both set to close their arguments.

Judge Mrs Justice Steyn is expected to give her decision in writing at a later date. There is no jury in the case.

Former I’m A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! contestant Vardy — who is married to Leicester City footballer Jamie Vardy — is suing Rooney for defamation in the High Court.

At the core of the trial is Coleen Rooney's public accusation that Rebekah Vardy’s Instagram account was the source of information leaked from her personal private account to The Sun newspaper.

Day six of the trial saw husbands Wayne Rooney and Jamie Vardy take the witness stand to give evidence, each defending their wives.

Wayne Rooney told the court that he had been asked to speak to Mr Vardy by England manager Roy Hodgson and his then assistant manager Gary Neville.

He said: “I’d need to speak to Mr Vardy and ask him to speak to his wife and ask him to say to ask his wife to calm down.”

However, Jamie Vardy later denied any such conversation had taken place.

Coleen Rooney announced on social media in October 2019 that she had narrowed down a list of suspects behind the leak to just one by gradually removing followers and posting fake updates until she declared the leaks came from Rebekah Vardy's account — hence the 'Wagatha Christie' nickname.

Rebekah Vardy is continuing to deny any involvement, even when asked about Coleen Rooney posting that it was “sad to think that someone I have accepted to follow me is betraying, either for money or to keep a relationship with the press”.

Rebekah Vardy's agent Caroline Watt had messaged her: “And it wasn’t someone she trusted, it was me.”

She claimed not to have replied to Watt's message because she was bathing her children and later added she was messaging Watt to discuss Gemma Collins “face-planting” on Dancing On Ice at the same time.

The two footballer wives were believed to have been friends as both their husbands played for England.

But Coleen Rooney has revealed during her evidence on the witness stand that she did not consider Rebekah Vardy any more than an acquaintance.

The trial has garnered a lot of interest in the press and on social media, as Rebekah Vardy's personal WhatsApp messages discussing Coleen Rooney have been read out in court, and the meaning of social media abbreviations and emojis have had to be explained to the judge.
