GIBSONBURG - In Gibsonburg on Shade Road in White Star Park, a little something special is now available for mountain bike enthusiasts — Waggoner's Run Mountain Bike Trail. It's a newer bike trail that twists and turns with nature. It offers manmade obstacles, bridges, skinnies, tabletops, and rock gardens.

The trail was conceived by a local group of cyclists, the Flatlanders Bicycle Club. With the approval of the Sandusky County Park District, the bike club broke ground in 2019, and in October 2020 it was completed.

“There have always been unsolicited trails at White Star,” said David Thornbury, marketing director of the Sandusky County Convention and Visitor Bureau. “They wanted to make it more interesting and make an official trail design for the cyclists.”

The trail itself is named for Dan Waggoner, a cycling enthusiast who owned a bicycle shop in Fremont.

The trail runs 6 miles and takes about 1 hour and 40 mins to complete. You can also hike the trail on foot, in the opposite direction of the bikes.

“The advanced rider can take advantage of the trails and ride the teeter totters, ride on flat limestone piles and if you don’t like those obstacles, you can go around them," Thornbury said. “It’s a beautiful bike trail.”

Waggoner’s Bike Trail is only open to cyclists and hikers and is open during park hours from September to April. The trail is open until 9 p.m. For more information about the trail or an events list visitsanduskycounty.org.
