A Wagner mercenary fatally stabbed the father of Russian propagandist Vladimir Legoyda, the head of the Russian Orthodox Church’s (ROC) press service, according to reports by Russian media on Dec. 29.

The assailant, Adam Shcherbakov, described as a "hero of the SMO," (special military operation) had previously served a nine-year sentence for robbery but was released to participate in the war against Ukraine — a cause supported by both the ROC and Legoyda himself.

Details of the murder revealed by Russian media add a chilling dimension: the mercenary, apparently strapped for cash, supposedly met Legoyda's 90-year-old father in a suburban restaurant.

Legoyda Sr. offered to give Shcherbakov a ride to the store. However, during the journey, the mercenary allegedly demanded 100,000 rubles ($1,120), leading to a confrontation and ultimately the murder.
