Here are the top five stories in Raleigh today:

  1. Wake County has the lowest per capita COVID-19 infection rate in the Raleigh metro area, and a relatively low per capita fatality rate. These rates are as of March 7. Per capita cases of the virus are higher in Raleigh than they are nationwide, as of the date of this report, but some parts of the metro area are safer than others. (Patch)

  2. As part of Severe Weather Preparedness Week, Wake County participated in a statewide tornado drill on Wednesday morning. We all know North Carolina can experience severe weather, including tornadoes, so it's important to know how to find safety when serious weather arrives. For tornadoes, get to the lowest level possible and move to an interior room away from windows. (CBS17.com)

  3. Dr. Tara Harrison of NC State's College of Veterinary Medicine says coyote sightings around Raleigh are more likely in the coming weeks as the animals' breeding season carries on. Coyotes are more active now, and they are vocalizing a lot, because their usual breeding season is February and March. However, in April and May, maternal coyotes venture out to search for food for their offspring. The mammals tend to avoid people, but nevertheless you should be careful about leaving small pets outdoors. Increased residential development means humans are encroaching on the coyotes' natural habitat, but the animals don't move away just because humans move in. Give them space, and don't feed them, or initiate any interactions. (CBS17.com)

  4. Gas prices surged again to a record high in North Carolina on Wednesday. The average price per gallon now is $4.15 in Raleigh. Only Ashe County and Alleghany County have an average price under $4 per gallon. The trickle-down effect to other goods is a real possibility, according to supply chain experts. There does not seem to be a quick resolution to the rising prices, so we will most likely be dealing with this for months. (WRAL News)

  5. Raleigh-Durham International Airport is adding eight new nonstop destinations with Frontier Airlines, after the air carrier announced a major service expansion on Wednesday. The economy airline added nonstop flights to Providence, Syracuse, Islip, Indianapolis, Detroit, Cincinnati, Newburg, and New Orleans. (WRAL)
