What Wake Forest football coach Dave Clawson said about not playing NC State after 110 straight years

CHARLOTTE — Wake Forest football coach Dave Clawson called losing the annual rivalry game against NC State "a negative" during Wednesday's ACC Kickoff.

The Atlantic Coast Conference announced its new football scheduling model last month, with each team facing three primary opponents every season starting in 2023. That did not include an NC State-Wake matchup that has taken place every year for over a century.

"The fact we get to play a team like Carolina is definitely a positive," Clawson said. "What we lose is we've played North Carolina State for 110 straight years. To see a game like that end is a negative. The NC State game is always a very important game."

The Wolfpack will face Clemson, Duke and UNC as their three primary opponents while Wake Forest will face Duke, Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech.

The schedule operates on a four-year cycle, with the three annual games rotating home and away. Teams will face the other 10 ACC squads twice during the cycle, once at home and once on the road, so that each team will face all 13 league opponents over the course of two seasons, each with eight conference games.

NC State holds a 67-42-6 series lead against the Demon Deacons, but it was Wake Forest that took a 45-42 win last year that led to an ACC Atlantic Division title.

The Wolfpack will host Wake Forest on Nov. 5 during the 2022 season.
