Wales vs USA LIVE: World Cup 2022 build-up and team news as Gareth Bale set to be in starting 11

Wales kick off their first World Cup campaign in 64 years when they go head-to-head with USA in both nations’ Group B opener. Both teams will have their sights set on the knockout rounds and victory tonight would boost their chances of making it out of a group that also features England and Iran.

Wales will rely on the talents of captain Gareth Bale and experienced midfielder Aaron Ramsey as they hope to impress in Qatar. Both players are coming to the latter stages of their careers but still shine when playing for their country with Bale in particular a provider of magical moments for the Dragons.

This will be their biggest test yet as USA look to make their mark on football’s greatest stage. They’ve had encouraging World Cup campaigns before, reaching the last 16 in 2010 and 2014, but they failed to qualify for the 2018 edition in Russia and as such, they will be especially keen to stick around in Qatar.

Gregg Berhalter’s team is full of young, attacking talent with Chelsea’s Christian Pulisic their main attraction. He’s supplemented with Brenden Aaronson and Tyler Adams from Leeds as well as a host of talent from across Europe’s top five leagues. This is a challenging USA team and one with high hopes for their campaign.

Closer than his last attempt, however...

Senegal 0-0 Netherlands

16:47 , Alex Pattle

45 mins: Twice Netherlands see crosses headed away, before Senegal break on the right wing.

A long, low pass is meant for Dia, who is rushing into Netherlands’ box, but he can’t quite reach it.

Senegal 0-0 Netherlands

16:46 , Alex Pattle

44 mins: De Jong evades some challenges on the halfway line with some neat dribbling.

Netherlands then work the ball out to their right, but they put it out for a throw-in.

Senegal soon lose possession, though, before Sabaly’s wayward defensive header sees Netherlands win a corner.

Senegal 0-0 Netherlands

16:43 , Alex Pattle

41 mins: Now Senegal win a free kick, deep in Netherlands’ half and on the left flank from the African side’s perspective.

Senegal 0-0 Netherlands

16:35 , Alex Pattle

33 mins: Netherlands win another free kick on the right, just outside the box. This is where they had their last.

This time Gakpo does curl it in, and Mendy comes some way to try to punch it clear! Between him and his defenders, they’re able to deal with it.

They also hang onto the ball, with Diallo in possession on the left. He slings a pass up the line, and Van Dijk takes no chances, passing it out for a Senegal throw-in as he’s outnumbered deep in his own half.

16:27 , Alex Pattle

25 mins: Sarr has the ball out left. He shimmies onto his right foot and whips a shot towards the back post, but Van Dijk stands up to it and heads it out for a Senegal corner!

Senegal 0-0 Netherlands

16:21 , Alex Pattle

19 mins: Wasted chance by De Jong!!

A lovely turn and through ball from Bergwijn on the right sets up Janssen, who ghosts through the Senegal back line and slides a pass across the box...

De Jong receives it in acres of space, cuts back onto his right foot, but he overthinks it as Senegal defenders retreat and loses the opportunity.

Senegal clear it!

Senegal 0-0 Netherlands

16:13 , Alex Pattle

Cisse is briefly down in the box, but he’s okay to continue.

Senegal 0-0 Netherlands

16:11 , Alex Pattle

9 mins: Some brave play by Netherlands at the back – brave but foolish!

They lose the ball on their left flank, and Senegal work it into the middle.

Sarr is in space and quickly gets a shot off... He curls it just over the crossbar!

Senegal 0-0 Netherlands

16:10 , Alex Pattle

8 mins: Senegal are probing here.

A deep cross doesn’t quite fall kindly enough for anyone to turn it in at the back post, but they’ll be encouraged by this spell.

Senegal 0-0 Netherlands

16:09 , Alex Pattle

7 mins: Now Senegal enjoy some possession, which results in them working the ball up the right flank.

Nothing comes of a brief opening, so they switch the ball to the left.

They play it back into the middle, where De Ligt fouls Sarr.

Senegal have a free kick, central and some way from goal.

Senegal 0-0 Netherlands

16:06 , Alex Pattle

4 mins: CHANCE FOR NETHERLANDS!

Gakpo’s cut-back from the right flashes across the face of the Senegal goal, and Bergwijn is stretching but unable to get on the end of it!!

Senegal 0-0 Netherlands

16:06 , Alex Pattle

3 mins: Netherlands play the ball around at the back, with centre backs Van Dijk and Ake passing it between themselves.

Van Dijk then boots a pass long, but Bergwijn can’t quite bring it down.

Gakpo ends up in possession on the right wing for the Netherlands, though, and they win a throw-in.

Senegal 0-0 Netherlands

16:04 , Alex Pattle

1 min: Early chance for Senegal as Sarr cuts a low pass behind Van Dijk and to Dia, whose shot is blocked and loops over the crossbar.

Corner to Senegal. Gueye to take...

But it’s headed out of the Netherlands box then cleared.

Senegal 0-0 Netherlands

It was vintage Louis van Gaal, if also a twist of the current van Gaal. The Dutch coach once asked one of his analytical teams to come up with a very specific piece of research because he wanted insight into a particular area of play. The staff member dutifully went off and did it, but warned that it might not be possible to express in numbers in the way van Gaal wanted.

“This is low quality,” the coach said, when he finally saw it.

“But it’s exactly what you asked for!” the staff member protested. Van Gaal fixed him that look, before chuckling and patting him on the back. The Dutch coach is famously forthright, but he’s also unfailingly honest – not least with himself.

And here is a player who may be vital for Senegal, especially in the absence of the injured Sadio Mane:

Breakout talent – Boulaye Dia: Senegal will have one of the older squads and starting line-ups in Qatar - the team that began the Africa Cup of Nations final had an average age of 30 - while Aliou Cisse’s side also have an overeliance on Mane for goals. However the 25-year-old striker Dia can help solve both of those potential issues at the World Cup. A scorer in the Champions League semi-finals for Villarreal last season, Dia only has three goals for his country but will likely lead the line for the Lions. If he finds form it will be both a boost to Senegal and Dia’s burgeoning career.

Here’s a look at a couple of the Netherlands’ key players...

Star – Virgil van Djik: An ACL injury cruelly denied the Liverpool defender his first appearance at a major tournament when he missed Euro 2020, and he will relish the opportunity of playing in Qatar. He remains one of the world’s top defenders, returning to his best last season, and although there have been question marks this campaign - the presence of the colossus helps bring certainty and assurance to the side that was missing at the Euros.

Breakout talent – Cody Gakpo: Manchester United sniffed around the PSV winger this summer and their interest was mirrorer by a host of other Premier League sides. Homegrown talent rarely stays in the Eredivisie for long and the 23-year-old certainty seems to be the next one off the block. A tall, rangy forward who looks to cut inside onto his right foot and is not shy of shooting at goal, he is among the top goalscorers in Europe this season.

The second World Cup 2022 game in Group A sees African champions Senegal face off against the Netherlands in a clash that could determine the eventual fate of the group. Both sides are tipped to make it into the knockouts, ahead of Ecuador and hosts Qatar, so today’s encounter may decide who finishes top.

Netherlands are fancied by some to go the distance at the which would cap a remarkable turnaround for the Oranje after they failed to even qualify four years ago with coach Louis van Gaal hoping for his side to dominate the group to put themselves into a good position to start the knockout rounds.

Prior to their absence at Russia 2018 they had reached the semi-finals and finals in the previous two World Cups, so there is an expectation and optimism in the country that they can return to prominence this time around.

Menawhile, Senegal come into the World Cup on the back of gut-punching news that Sadio Mane is out injured and will miss the tournament. He was a vital part of their qualifying campaign and scored the goals to both win them the Afcon and qualify for Qatar. The Lions of Teranga will now have to rely on Chelsea duo Edouard Mendy and Kalidou Koulibaly who will play pivotal roles if the African nation are to reach the last 16.
