Walgreens will soon close one of its two downtown Cincinnati locations.

The pharmacy store located at 601 Race St. will permanently close Nov. 15, according to a sign on the storefront window. It will close at 3 p.m. that day.

Kris Lathan, a Walgreens spokesperson, told The Enquirer via email that several factors are considered when deciding to close a location, such as the existing footprint of stores, dynamics of the local market and changes in the buying habits of patients and customers.

Customers whose prescriptions were filled at the Race Street location will not have to take any action, Lathan added. Prescription files will automatically transfer to the nearest Walgreens store, which in this instance, is the 406 Main St. location that is remaining open.

Patients should expect to receive notice about the transfer through mail and other means, which will contain more information about how to access prescriptions and health and wellness services.

According to CNN, pharmacy chains, such as Walgreens, CVS and Rite Aid, have been eliminating locations nationwide due to rising competition from online retailers and large department stores with pharmacies.

Walgreens originally announced in 2019 it would close 200 stores nationwide, and in June, the company said it plans to shutter an additional 150 stores by August 2024.

Walgreens currently has 99 stores in the Greater Cincinnati area.
