Walgreens closing Hagerstown-area pharmacy

Walgreens is closing its pharmacy at the Robinwood Professional Center, part of Meritus Health's medical campus east of Hagerstown, on Aug. 23.

The closure announcement is part of the phone greeting when calling the pharmacy in Suite 105 of the center at 11110 Medical Campus Road and the company also mailed a customer notice about at which Walgreens pharmacy prescriptions can be picked up.

The national pharmacy chain and Meritus Medical Center settled a lawsuit out of court early this year. Walgreens, based in Deerfield, Ill., had sued after the hospital opened its own pharmacy for the public. The suit claimed the hospital's new pharmacy broke a contract between the two entities.

Marty Maloney, spokesperson for Walgreens, provided the following statement via email: "As we move forward on our strategy to expand Walgreens role as a leader in the delivery of local healthcare, we are focused on creating the right network of stores in the right locations to best meet the needs of the communities we serve.

"We have made the difficult decision to close this location. There are a number of factors that we take into consideration including dynamics of the local market and changing buying habits of our customers."

Earlier this summer, Walgreens revealed plans to close 150 of its U.S. stores, but did not announce which ones.

There were not additional details to share about those closings as of Monday, Maloney wrote.
