Walgreens expands COVID-19 vaccine sign-ups to South Florida

Walgreens is expanding its COVID-19 vaccine distribution roster into South Florida. The retail giant confirmed Wednesday that this week it will expand into 13 sites that now include Palm Beach County.

Walgreens became the latest pharmacy in Florida to give the vaccines last week within the six counties of Pasco, Charlotte, Polk, Manatee, Marion and Citrus counties.

In addition to Palm Beach County, the other new counties added Wednesday are Duval, Clay, Nassau, Santa Rosa, Collier and Hendry.

A Walgreens spokesperson would not say how many stores within each county will have the vaccine.

The retail chain has 25,740 doses earmarked for Florida for the week, according to the spokesperson.

People can visit Walgreens.com/ScheduleVaccine or call 1-800-WALGREENS to schedule. The second dose appointment will be made at the point of vaccination. Currently, only teachers, medically vulnerable, healthcare workers, and firefighters and police over age 50 and seniors over age 65 are eligible. Seniors age 60 and older can start scheduling Monday.

Gov. Ron DeSantis said Wednesday the next phase will be people ages 55 and older, and then everybody will become eligible after that. No timetable was given when that would begin.

Walgreens is the latest pharmacy to offer the vaccine in Florida through the Federal Retail Pharmacy Program, joining CVS, Publix, Walmart and Southeastern Grocers, the parent company for Winn-Dixie. The retail pharmacy program is separate from the state’s allocation of vaccines, which is designated for Department of Health locations, hospitals, Publix and other select sites.
