The Walgreens store near WestGate Mall in Spartanburg will close Feb. 16.

Signs are posted at the entrance of the pharmacy/retailer at 1510 W.O. Ezell Blvd. notifying customers that the store will close at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 16.

The signs state that prescription records will be available at all Walgreens, including the store at 2410 Reidville Road in Spartanburg.

A manager at the W.O. Ezzell Blvd. Walgreens referred all questions to the corporate media relations department.

The manager said employees will be transferred to other stores. A typical Walgreens has 24 employees, according to the company's website. There are 10 Walgreens stores in Spartanburg County.

Walgreens media relations spokeswoman Kris Lathan said the store that is closing is the only one in Spartanburg County planned for closure.

"While we have made the difficult decision to close this location, as we move forward on our strategy to expand Walgreens' role as a leader in the delivery of healthcare, we are focused on creating the right network of stores in the right locations to best meet the needs of the communities we serve," Lathan said in an emailed response.

"There are a number of factors that we take into consideration, including the dynamics of the local market and changing buying habits of our customers. Prescription files will automatically transfer to other nearby stores. Customers do not need to take any action. Pharmacy patients will receive a letter in the mail providing more information about their prescription records."

Walgreens operates 8,965 drugstores in 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Walgreens pharmacies filled an estimated 827.5 million prescriptions in fiscal 2021, including immunizations, according to company information.

Walgreens offers free drive-thru COVID-19 testing for patients age 3 and up at many locations.

The pharmacies also offer free COVID-19 vaccines and boosters at most locations.

Walgreens was founded in 1901 by Charles R. Walgreen Sr. near Galesburg, Ilinois.

No CVS closures

Meanwhile, a CVS Health spokesperson said Tuesday there are no Spartanburg area CVS store closures planned.

"We have no plans to close stores in Spartanburg County this year," the spokesperson said.

CVS also offers COVID-19 testing and vaccines at most locations.
