Walk from art space to art space in Newburgh as spring arrives

Spring in the Hudson Valley is invigorating. As Mother Nature awakens from her slumber, so do the streets and cities across our area. People begin to travel more and weekend adventures start to unfold with the many offerings in our region. NBNY Art Seen is contributing to this energy in a big way as it opens up its second season of art walks starting April 29.

First created in 2022, NBNY Art Seen is an initiative by the community of galleries and art spaces in the city of Newburgh. The galleries, which have a great enthusiasm for the community, residents and visitors, offer an alternative for people to purchase affordable art while enhancing the beauty of Newburgh. Occurring on the last Saturday of each month from April through October, the spaces participating will be open during the afternoon to the public. This monthly art walk coincides with the Hudson Valley art season that generally runs from April through October.

The public is invited to experience the growing art scene nestled in and around the historic district of the city of Newburgh. NBNY Art Seen gives viewers a chance to walk from art space to art space while taking in the historic architecture, and blossoming restaurant and shopping area found overlooking the riverscape.

Galleries participating in April include Visitor Center, Grit Works, ADS Gallery, Ann Street Gallery, Mindy Ross Gallery at SUNY Orange Newburgh Kaplan Hall, CMA Gallery Aquinas Hall at Mount Saint Mary College, and Elijah Wheat Showroom.

Eva Zanard, who runs Visitor Center said, “I am excited for everyone to come witness the beauty of Newburgh. There are so many hidden gems and stories to be told.” Visitor Center located at 233 Liberty Street will present works by Sophia De Jesus-Sabella, Soull Ogun, Patricia Orpilla, Sagarika Sundaram, and Mia Wright-Ross. The exhibit entitled, “Provenance” presents contemporary artists who engage craft materials and traditions to consider intertwining notions of materiality, lineage, and identity.

Down a few blocks on 115 Broadway, Grit Works Gallery will present “Figures - Burden - Loneliness.” Inspired by wild beasts, a lifetime of experience and the lonely, beautiful places of our lives, Morris Shuman, David Patino and Davis Lionheart create an incredible journey for the viewer through three different mediums.

Around the corner, ADS Gallery on 105 Ann Street has James Savage’s “Hearts and Minds” on display. Take a stroll across the street to see “Cause We Be Complicated: Dialogues of Black Artists” curated by Jonette O’Kelley Miller and Karen E. Gersch.

The colleges in this area are also getting in on the action. Both Mindy Ross Gallery at SUNY Orange and CMA Gallery Aquinas Hall at Mount Saint Mary College will participate in this year’s NBNY Art Seen. A couple of blocks from Mount Saint Mary College, you can find Elijah Wheat Showroom on 195 Front Street where Marton Nemes “Amplifier” has currently been extended.

“I want people to know that NBNY Art Seen is open for business,” James Jackson, facilitator for NBNY Art Seen says. “I want all to come explore and see for themselves the art seen igniting.”
