A Walk in the Park: Wiswasser Park across from Park Lake in Bath Township perfect for families

A Walk in the Park is an ongoing series from State Journal photographer Nick King, who intends to explore Lansing area parks one hour at a time. If you have a suggestion of a park he should visit, email him at nking@lsj.com.

Wiswasser Park is a family-friendly park across from Park Lake in Bath Township. It's only 1.5 acres, but it offers the perfect setting for recreation and family outings.

The park features an open field with a few large shade trees, a large, newer playground equipped with an ADA-accessible swing set, tether and gaga ball pits, a covered pavilion with seating for 60, grills and picnic tables.

The park at 6499 Park Lake Road is across the street from the Rickard Boat Launch at Park Lake, which is the lake's only public access point. Guests can drop in their boats, fish or enjoy a picnic at a table next to the lake.

Wiswasser Park is dedicated to the memory of community leader V. Jack Wiswasser, whose family came to Bath in 1928 to help in the clean up in the aftermath of the Bath School Disaster, according to the park's memorial marker. He ended up staying in the community where he ran businesses, and later became chief of police.

Dogs are allowed on leashes; both the park and boat launch have parking areas. Permanent bathrooms are on site at the park. Murals on the exterior of the bathroom building are made up of panels painted by various community members through a Bath Public Art Committee project. The murals depict the lake, boating, fishing and nature.
