Wall Hawks get lightning-delayed series sweep of Jacksboro
The Wall High School baseball team had to wait a bit but the Hawks advanced to the Class 3A baseball regional quarterfinals with a sweep of Jacksboro in an area-round series at Abilene Christian University’s Crutcher Scott Field.
The Hawks beat Jacksboro 4-3 on Thursday and were an out away from a 2-1 win in Game 2 on Friday when lightning delayed the game about 2 ½ hours.
The delay denied Hawk starter Luke Kemp of a complete-game one hitter as Matt Steen pitched the final out. Kemp finished with 14 strikeouts and gave up just one hit and one run in getting the win.
Kemp was 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI double. Will Scherr and Dylan Gidney were both 2-for-3 at the plate. Kelton Bowman also drove in a run as the Hawks totaled nine hits. They left 10 stranded as they only managed to plate two against Jacksboro.
In Thursday’s series opener, the Hawks led 3-2 after the fourth inning and pushed the lead to 4-2 in the seventh and held on for the win.
Gunnar Dillard had a double and two RBI. Nathan Pepper got the win on the mound. He pitched a complete game and gave up six hits and three runs, striking out six.
The Hawks improved to 26-6 and will play the winner of the series between Ballinger and Bowie in the regional quarterfinals.
