Muffin recall 2021: Walmart, Sam's Club, 7-Eleven sold muffins recalled for listeria contamination

Give and Go Prepared Foods Corp. is voluntarily recalling select muffins for possible listeria contamination.

The muffins were sold nationwide under various brand names, including Uncle Wally's, and store brands, including at Walmart, S7-Eleven and Stop & Shop, according to a recall notice posted on the Food and Drug Administration website.

"Consumers who have these products should immediately dispose of the products and not eat them," the company said in the recall. (The list of affected products is listed below.)

Listeria can cause common food poisoning symptoms, like diarrhea and fever, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says. But it can also cause severe illness, known as invasive listeriosis, when the bacteria spread beyond the gut to other parts of the body.

Symptoms of severe illness usually start one to four weeks after eating contaminated food, but symptoms can start as late as 10 weeks after.

Adults 65 or older, pregnant women and people with weakened immune systems are at higher risk for severe illness from listeria, the CDC says.

Walmart brands affected by the recall include Freshness Guaranteed, Marketside and Great Value.

Give and Go said it became aware of the issue as part of its "environmental monitoring program" and that it has not received reports of "illness related to this issue and are taking this action out of an abundance of caution."

Consumers with questions about the recall can call 1-844-366-1171 to get more information. The company says consumers should "make a note of the lot code of the products, which is found on the label, and provide it if they contact us."
