WORCESTER — Walmart, under a different corporate name, is applying for a license to sell beer, wine and malt beverages at the Worcester supercenter located at 25 Tobias Boland Way.

Originally on the agenda for a License Commission meeting Thursday, a hearing for the package store license was postponed to April 20. The applicant on the agenda is Westborough Beverage Corp., a corporate name that Walmart has used in applications with other municipalities, such as Westfield and Plymouth.

The Worcester Walmart Supercenter previously applied for a beer and wine license in 2011. However, the License Commission rejected the application after it drew fierce opposition from smaller package store owners who feared their customers would rather purchase their drinks from the same store where they already shop for groceries and other needs.

License Commission members said at the time they did not want to award a new license in an area that already had several package stores.

Last year, voters rejected a ballot measure supported by the Massachusetts Package Store Association and some smaller retail shops that would have gradually raised the number of combined liquor licenses any one retailer could hold. The proposal would have also limited the number of alcoholic beverage licenses any one retailer could hold to seven.

Supporters framed the measure as a way to assuage the fears that package stores would be driven out of competition by big-box stores, while also allowing more grocery stores to sell beer and wine. Maryland-based alcohol store chain Total Wine & More spent a large sum to oppose the measure.

Last year, the state Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission said Worcester was entitled to more full-package liquor store licenses and more beer-and-wine sales licenses.

The city now can issue 42 beer-and-wine sales licenses and 42 full-sale licenses.

According to their websites, several Worcester County Walmart supercenters sell alcohol including locations in North Oxford, Northborough, Hudson, Ware and Gardner.
