Walsh University adding two sports to athletics program

NORTH CANTON − Walsh University is adding a women’s varsity STUNT team and a men’s sprint football team to its athletics program.

The university will begin its search for coaches immediately so that the teams may compete beginning with the 2023-24 school year, the school said.

STUNT is a team sport that focuses on the technical and athletic components of cheer, including partner stunts, pyramids, basket tosses, jumps and tumbling in a head-to-head game format. Walsh said it is the fastest-growing female intercollegiate sport in the country.

The Great Midwest Athletic Conference will sponsor its inaugural conference championship next spring. Conference members Ashland University, Tiffin University and Ursuline College offer the sport, with the potential for additional members in 2023-24.

Walsh will join the newly formed Midwest Sprint Football League next fall. Sprint football follows the standard American football rules, including 11 on 11 format, but it requires players to weigh 178 pounds or less and have a minimum of 5% body fat to be eligible, the school said.

Other schools competing in the league include Bellarmine University, Calumet College of St. Joseph, Quincy University, Fontbonne University, Midway University and St. Mary of the Woods College.
