Philadelphia police officials revealed Tuesday that two police officers fired seven shots each at Walter Wallace Jr, a 27-year-old black man who was killed while approaching them with a knife.

The shooting occurred on Monday afternoon and sparked protests in the city.

Police officials said it has yet to be determined how many shots actually hit Mr Wallace.

Philadelphia Police Chief Danielle Outlaw claimed that 30 officers were injured during protests following the shooting.

She denounced violence and destruction from protesters, but said would investigate the shooting.

"There are many questions that demand answers. Residents have my assurance that those questions will be fully addressed by the investigation," she said.
