Waltham’s PhysicianOne Shares Do’s, Don’ts Of At-Home Covid Tests

·2 min read

WALTHAM, MA — PhysicianOne Urgent Care's Chief Medical Officer Dr. Jeannie Kenkare has released a list of tips on the dos and donts of at-home COVID-19 testing.

According to Kenkare, rapid COVID-19 test results are a great resource, but should not be taken with 100 percent assurance, as many times a more sensitive PCR test or other testing is necessary.

"Rapid COVID-19 tests, when properly administered, are an important tool to help us navigate the pandemic,” said Kenkare. "The CDC recommends using rapid tests if you exhibit symptoms of COVID, had a potential exposure and before traveling or gathering with at risk individuals."

"When using these tests it is important to understand what they tell you, and what they don’t tell you,” she continued. "A single rapid antigen test is not the be-all, end-all answer about whether you are at risk of spreading COVID-19 or later developing symptoms.”

According to PhysicianOne, those who experience classic COVID-19 symptoms but get negative results from an at-home rapid test should still isolate, mask around others, and be diligent in hand washing.

Those who get negative results from the first test should also take a second test 24 to 36 hours later. If the test is still negative, the likelihood that it is not COVID-19 is increased. Those who are testing due to a known or potential exposure should wait three to five days after that exposure before testing.

"Our motto is when in doubt, get it checked out,” said Kenkare. If you have any question or concern surrounding COVID-19, I highly encourage you to seek care at an urgent care facility or your primary care provider’s office. We are here to help you make sense of your health, and that knowledge is critical as you assess your risk tolerance amid the ongoing pandemic.”
