Walton County Commission selects Stan Sunday as interim county administrator

FREEPORT — The Walton County Commission chose Stan Sunday in a 3-2 vote on Friday to be the interim county administrator after Quinn Robertson was fired without cause earlier in the week.

Commissioners Tony Anderson, Brad Drake and Donna Johns voted for Sunday, with Danny Glidewell and William McCormick dissenting, opting for Charlie Simmons.

Here is what we know.

After 32 years working in various Walton County jobs, Sunday resigned from his role as deputy administrator of operations in August 2021. He had received pushback from Glidewell and former County Commissioner Michael Barker after threatening the county with a whistle-blower complaint.

In a 2021 Northwest Florida Daily News article, a Tallahassee-based law firm described the actions by Glidewell and Barker as "violations of law, gross mismanagement and malfeasance."

Through his legal team, Sunday received an amicable severance package that paid him his regular salary of $150,000 until September 2022.

On Monday, the Northwest Florida Daily News reached out to Walton County Public Information Officer Ron Kelly to see what Sunday's potential salary could be once he assumes his new role. Kelly did not immediately have that information. However, Robertson agreed to a salary of $175,000 when he accepted the position in June. He will be owed $70,000 after his termination.

What's next?

On Friday, Feb. 1, a special meeting will be held to approve and authorize Sunday's employment as the interim county administrator.

The meeting will be held at 10 a.m. at the DeFuniak Springs Boardroom, located at 571 U.S. 90 E.
