‘WandaVision’ and ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ win big as Marvel dominates MTV Movie & TV Awards

It was a Marvelous night at the 2021 MTV Movie & TV Awards, with two Disney+ superhero series picking up coveted honors.

Sunday’s ceremony at the Hollywood Palladium saw “WandaVision” win the award for best show, while star Elizabeth Olsen took home the golden popcorn trophy for best performance in a show for her portrayal of the Marvel sorcerer Wanda.

“I’ve loved playing this part for seven years,” said Olsen, who has repeatedly portrayed Wanda in the Marvel movies. “Really, nothing could’ve been better than to have ‘WandaVision.’ We had so much fun making it, and I hope we moved you. I hope we entertained you.”

Kathryn Hahn, meanwhile, won best villain for her turn on “WandaVision” as the wicked witch Agatha, while an epic battle in the season finale between Olsen’s and Hahn’s characters also netted the honor for best fight.

Anthony Mackie took the award for best hero for his portrayal of the new Captain America on another Marvel series, “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.” The honor for best duo also went to “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” which stars Sebastian Stan alongside Mackie.

“You guys will never know the amount of blood, sweat and tears that went into this show,” Mackie said onstage after winning the hero trophy. “So thank you.”

“WandaVision,” which led all shows and movies Sunday with six nominations, centered on Olsen’s character conjuring up an alternate reality in which she and her lost lover, Vision, live in sitcoms from different decades.

Sunday’s MTV Movie & TV Awards began with host Leslie Jones parodying “WandaVision” with a sketch that dropped her into various comedy series, including “Family Matters,” for which she dressed as Steve Urkel.

Another Marvel star, Scarlett Johansson, received the MTV generation award Sunday to honor a career that’s featured movies like “Lost in Translation,” “Jojo Rabbit” and the “Avengers” flicks.

“This award really belongs to many hundreds of creative people all over the world, and thank you so much to my fans for riding the wave with me and for supporting my career so I can continue to have the good fortune to pursue the job that is my passion,” Johansson said during a virtual acceptance speech.

Sacha Baron Cohen was also honored during the MTV Movie & TV Awards with the comedic genius award. During a virtual speech, Cohen suited up as some of his classic characters, including Borat, Ali G and Bruno.

“Thank you MTV,” Cohen said. “To the millions of fans out there who voted for me, I salute you. This is yours. I’d be nothing without you. I’m so humbled by this.”

Chadwick Boseman posthumously received the honor for best performance in a movie for “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” in which he played a headstrong horn player at a tumultuous recording session.

The trophy for best movie went to the teen romance flick “To All the Boys: Always and Forever,” which debuted in February as the third entry to the popular Netflix film franchise.

In addition to her emceeing duties, Jones was a winner herself at Sunday’s show. She received best comedic performance for “Coming 2 America,” in which she played the mother of Prince Akeem’s estranged son.

Earlier, Jones turned the ceremony into a standup stage as she reeled off jokes about films and TV series during her high-energy opening monologue.

“I watched ‘One Night in Miami.’ But Imma tell y’all right now, I ain’t never had a night like that in Miami,” Jones joked of the movie that envisions a meeting between Muhammad Ali, Jim Brown, Sam Cooke and Malcolm X.

“With fine-a— Jim Brown and Muhammad Ali? I mean, I had a decent afternoon in Cleveland,” Jones deadpanned.

The live ceremony marked a return to a traditional format for the MTV Movie & TV Awards, which transitioned to a “Greatest of All Time” special last year.

Presenters, award recipients and members of the audience did not wear masks during the broadcast.

The main ceremony will be followed Monday by an inaugural “MTV Movie & TV Awards: UNFILTERED” event that celebrates reality TV. That show will also take place at the Hollywood Palladium.
