There may not be crying in baseball, but there will soon be betting.

The Ohio Casino Control Commission conditionally approved the Cincinnati Reds for a sports betting license on Wednesday. The Reds were one of more than 800 businesses that submitted a license application.

Nearly 700 are Type C retailers, which include bars, restaurants, grocery stores and other liquor permit holders that want to host sports betting kiosks. The others consist of bigger players including the Reds, other pro sports teams, casinos and mobile apps.

The Reds have a partnership with BetMGM for its retail sportsbook, and Underdog Sports Wagering LLC will be the team's mobile service provider.

Other Cincinnati pro teams, including the Bengals and FC Cincinnati, have also applied. FC Cincinnati submitted its application July 15 and will be using SBOpco LLC (SuperBook), and the Bengals applied July 14 using Betfred Sports (Ohio) LLC as its mobile management services provider. Neither team has been granted conditional approval.

The Hard Rock Casino Cincinnati submitted an application July 12, but it has not yet received conditional approval as of Wednesday. The casino will be using Seminole Hard Rock Digital LLC as its first mobile management services provider.

Gov. Mike DeWine signed the bill into law in 2021, approving sports betting to begin. And in June of this year, the Ohio Casino Control Commission announced that the state's sports betting program would have a universal start date of Jan. 1, 2023.
