I Want 15 of These Race-Prepped Honda Groms
Of all the time I’ve spent on a racetrack, nothing has been as fun as playing with the M1GP team on the kart track at Willow Springs. Those guys take tiny, 50cc Honda motorcycles, ditch the knobbies for street tires, drape you in leathers, and teach you how to get a knee down. Then they let you race a bunch of other idiots. It’s side-splitting fun, with zero-consequence crashes, drafting, and jousting as you hone your bike skills. While the go-to machine is the CRF50, you can enter a Honda Grom in M1GP’s endurance races. Turns out, Honda’s Racing arm, HRC, knows exactly how much fun a tiny bike can be on race track.
Behold the Honda Racing Corporation Grom Race-Based Bike. What it lacks in elegant nomenclature it makes up for in pint-sized badassery. HRC strips the machine of all unnecessary hardware, then adds back that headlightless cowl and aggressive muffler. Oh, and all the HRC stickers you can stand. According to RideApart you can’t buy the package as individual parts. Instead, you have to go to an HRC service shop in Japan, which will then take a brand-new Grom and prep it for you. That means the bikes aren’t street legal and they don’t come with a warranty. There’s also no word on how much the kit will cost you.
Now for the best part: HRC plans to hold a Grom Cup in 2021, which means we’ll get to watch a field of these things buzzing around your favorite Japanese circuits very soon. Until then, we’ll get back to searching for cheap CRF50s.
