Want to go on an adventure? Here are 5 one-day adventures in Rhode Island

Life is better with a little adventure.

Maybe you're looking for something that will get you out of your comfort zone. Maybe you're looking for something the kids will remember for a long time. Maybe you want to get out of your house. Maybe you just like thrills.

Whatever your reason, there are lots of places to explore in Little Rhody. We rounded up five options to cater to the adventurous spirit of Rhode Islanders. Here's the list.

Deep-sea fishing

It’s called the Ocean State for a reason. Fishing off the coast of Rhode Island. Cod, black sea bass, tautog, striped bass, fluke and tuna are all tasty, popular fish to try for depending on the season. Some of them give a wicked fight when hooked.

There are options for how to go about it. A head boat, like the Frances Fleet or the Seven B’s, both out of the Port of Galilee, will get you out on the water, with the help of the deckhand, for a reasonable price. But there are also charter boats for a more focused trip, with fewer people, that often allows for the targeting of bigger fish.

Riding the rails

Explore the Old Colony Railroad, build in 1862, in a new way on the pedal-powered rail vehicle, for two or for four via Rail Explorers, 1 Alexander Rd., Portsmouth. There are two six-mile trips to choose from, the Northern Ramble or the Southern Circuit; both are six miles with views of Narragansett Bay.

In addition to the daily rides, there’s also a brunch tour with mimosas, bloody marys, freshly baked pastries from The French Confection, fruit and Springline coffee, if that’s more your speed, and there's also a lantern ride in the evenings.

Rock climbing

If you’re looking for indoor rock climbing, there are four gyms in Rhode Island to try out – Central Rock Gym in Warwick and Rock Spot Climbing in Providence, Lincoln and South Kingstown. They offer family-friendly environments and encourage young climbers to try out the sport. All four gyms offer day passes.

If you’re looking for outdoor climbing, the most popular spot in Rhode Island to go bouldering is Lincoln Woods State Park in Lincoln. It’s not uncommon to see climbers with mats out under some of the larger granite boulders.

Skydiving

A bucket-list item for sure, skydiving offers a unique view of the state and beyond. For those who want to experience the jump, there’s Skydive Newport, 211 Airport Access Rd. in Middletown, and Boston Skydive Center, North Central State Airport, 300 Jenckes Hill Rd., Smithfield.

Ziplining

Soar 115 feet over the Roger Williams Park Zoo on the Soaring Eagle zipline, which takes you on a two-minute ride over the south end of the zoo. The 760-foot ride will give you great views of the city skyline and Narragansett Bay. Tickets are $9 per rider.

If you’re looking for a longer ziplining experience, you’ll have to leave the state. Just over the border in Mystic, Connecticut, there’s Tree Trails Adventure, 715 Noank Ledyard Road, where they have a whole network of ziplines and treetop obstacles to explore.
