Questions from Akron residents will take center stage at the second of two upcoming Akron Decides debates between candidates running for Akron mayor.

The seven Democratic candidates in the May 2 primary have been invited to the debates on April 5 and 12. Those who meet the debate criteria will be eligible to participate.

The 7 p.m. April 12 debate will be held at the Akron-Summit County Public Library on High Street. It is free and open to the public.

Candidates will answer questions from the public submitted in advance at this debate. The debate will be moderated by Rick Jackson, Ideastream senior host/producer, and Andrew Meyer, Ideastream Public Media deputy editor/news.

Those who wish to submit a question for the April 12 debate should visit this link available on the Ohio Debate Commission web site to do so in writing or with a video.

Tickets for the event are available through the Ohio Debate Commission web site.

The first debate is at noon April 5 during an Akron Press Club luncheon at Quaker Station with questions coming from local journalists.

Doors will open at 11 a.m. The debate will start at noon and last 90 minutes. There will be a $35 charge for the lunch, with proceeds funding scholarships for journalism and public relations students. Those who do not wish to eat lunch may attend at no charge.

Reservations are required for the lunch and for those who wish to attend but not have lunch. Reservations are taken on a first-come, first-served basis at the Akron Press Club web site.

The Akron Press Club, Ideastream Public Media, Akron Beacon Journal/BeaconJournal.com and the Ohio Debate Commission are collaborating to engage voters in the 2023 Akron mayoral through the debates.

Ideastream/WKSU and BeaconJournal.com will livestream the debates. Ideastream also will air them on television and radio at a later time.
