Reuben sandwiches are synonymous with St. Patrick’s Day.

The recipe features rye bread, corned beef, Swiss cheese, sauerkraut and Thousand Island dressing. The ingredients come together for a delicious, sodium-heavy treat of a sandwich.

The history of Reuben sandwiches is a little messy — similar to the sandwich itself. The origin of the Reuben isn’t exactly clear.

It was originally thought up at Omaha’s Blackstone Hotel in 1925, according to history.nebraska.gov. Reuben Kulakofsky, a local grocer, made the sandwich to feed a group of late-night poker players.

One of the players was Charles Schimmel, the hotel owner, and he liked the sandwich so much that he put it on the menu at the hotel's restaurant, The Plush Horse.

A mid-1940s menu from The Plush Horse lists the Reuben sandwich, and newspaper accounts report a 1937 menu from the Cornhusker Hotel in Lincoln, Nebraska, also listing the Reuben. The Schimmel family also owned the Cornhusker Hotel.

A competing claim for the origins of the Reuben comes from New York. The family of Arnold Reuben, who owned a series of New York City restaurants, claim that he served a sandwich similar to the classic Reuben in his restaurants. But only family stories substantiate the claim.

No matter its origin story, the Reuben is here to stay. Looking to score one for St. Patrick’s Day? You’re in luck. Here are 28 local restaurants serving Reuben sandwiches, plus one spot you can get a Reuben-type wrap.
