‘We want her back safe’: Florida woman vanishes in Spain under ‘strange’ circumstances

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — A Florida woman’s friends and family are desperately seeking answers after she vanished in Spain earlier this month.

Ana Knezevich, 40, had just recently moved to Fort Lauderdale for a fresh start, as she was “going through a stressful time in her personal life,” the woman’s friend, Sanna Rameau, told NBC affiliate WTVJ.

Rameau, who described her friend as caring, sweet, smart, and adventurous, said Knezevich has been living in an apartment in Madrid, Spain, since December, but on Friday, Feb. 2, 2024, she vanished.

“Someone has done something to her, and I’m trying to understand who it could be and why?” Rameau told WTVJ.

According to Rameau, she had sent Knezevich a text message on the day she disappeared and didn’t hear back until the next day when Knezevich told her that she had “met someone and was going to his summer home two hours from Madrid and the cellular signal would be spotty.”

Rameau told WTVJ that she found the text “strange” and thought that someone else was texting her off her friend’s phone.

“I tried to respond saying I was worried about her, like ‘you don’t sound safe,'” Rameau said. “What is she talking about? This makes no sense, and my messages didn’t go through, either.”

A day had gone by, and when Rameau never heard back from Knezevich, she contacted the police in Madrid.

On Feb. 4, friends also contacted the local fire department to do a wellness check, and Knezevich was nowhere to be found.

“They didn’t find her,” Rameau told WTVJ. “Looks like she left the apartment, locking it from the outside. That’s the last we know.”

While Knezevich hadn’t been seen, Rameau said authorities in Madrid told her something strange was captured on surveillance video about 30 minutes before the 40-year-old vanished.

“A man with a helmet sprayed the surveillance cameras outside the directory of her apartment building and waited for two people to leave the building and took the opportunity to go inside and spray the surveillance camera inside by the elevator,” Rameau stated.

According to WTVJ, Madrid police are investigating Knezevich’s disappearance, and the woman’s family is working with the FBI to track her down; however, they have no leads so far.

“We miss, and we love her,” Rameau said. “We want her back safe.”
