At this point we’ve all heard of man caves and the viral she shed. But even if you don’t quite have room for all of that, HGTV personality Egypt Sherrod (you know her from Property Virgins, Flipping Virgins, and Rock the Block) urges you to think about creating an at-home oasis.

During the pandemic, she turned a storage closet off of the laundry room in her Atlanta home into a meditation space. The idea came after her three children took over the kitchen table and her office for virtual school. “I had no place for me, and I got to a point where I said, Okay I have got to just think differently about this and create a space in my house where I can go and breathe for a minute. So I decided to create a meditation closet,” Sherrod tells AD.

Layered jute rugs, Moroccan poufs, serene wall art, and a salt lamp create a space where she can “close the door and just forget that there is pure chaos and ketchup on my kitchen walls,” she says. Aside from providing her with some much-needed me time, the meditation closet landed her a partnership with Command Brand, and now Sherrod and Command are offering people the chance to win a consultation with her to create a small-space retreat of their own, plus $5,000 and an assortment of products. You can enter here, and below, she tells us more.

Architectural Digest: How do you use your meditation closet?

Egypt Sherrod: I do box breathing and meditation in there. I start my day with my gratitude practice and then I close my day with my release practices. I have to be comfortable, so I put some layered jute rugs and some really earthy and grounding materials around me. Some Moroccan poufs—a little over two years ago I went to Morocco and fell in love. I was like, I need a pouf everywhere. I put images on the walls that are very serene and offer me peace. I also hung some macrame. I also have a little crystal salt lamp and incense. All of that to me creates a vibe. I have a 90-day alignment planner that I just launched [that I use in the meditation space]. It allows you to write down all of your daily gratitudes instead of writing down a list of all of the things you have to do. It forces you to write down everything that aligns your mind, body, and soul first. It is a labor of love that was birthed during the pandemic.

What are some of your ideas for the person who wins the consultation?

The first thing we’d need to know is what their lifestyle is like. What do they need? What are they lacking? With many people working from home, they are looking around like, Where can I put a desk? Where can I hang my pencils and pens and stack my papers? So if that is what is needed, then we can certainly create a “cloffice” space. Or many folks are looking for a creative mode of expression since they can’t necessarily go out and travel and do all the fun things. People are taking up new hobbies like scrapbooking and crocheting. We can create a craft station. Maybe someone will need a meditative retreat. I posted my meditative space on Instagram, and somebody actually said they created an emotional-stability closet. “Whenever I want to cry, I just go in there and cry,” they said.

If someone wants to try to create one of these spaces on their own, what are some space-saving hacks they should keep in mind?

For organizational purposes and functionality, we have to take ourselves out of the box of thinking that everything has to be lateral. You can also build up and utilize wall space, especially in small areas. You can layer. You can stack. That is one of the biggest hacks, and you can accomplish it with Command. If you are going to do a crafting station you can do several layers of hooks and put containers on the wall. It is harm-free and no tools needed. Sometimes people have the mental illusion that putting too much on the wall feels junky, but actually, it can be very beautiful when done correctly.

How would you describe your personal style when it comes to home decor?

I would say comfy luxe. I don’t want to sacrifice high design and something that is edgy and beautiful and makes me feel good. But at the same time, the reality is I do have three kids and they are going to be messy and jump on things. What I had to do was incorporate comfort and durability with performance fabrics.

When will fans see you on TV again?

Well, I just did the Beach Cabana Royale with Snooki—you may remember her from Jersey Shore. We judged several designers who designed cabanas. It was really offbeat, but a lot of fun. You can watch it on Discovery+. Also my husband and I were judges on Rock the Block, which just ended. Right now I can’t tell you much more except to say that my husband and I just started filming something!
