Want 'intense action'? Here are the Fall River area basketball games to watch this season

The high school winter basketball season is official underway for Greater Fall River teams.

The Herald News takes a look at some games to watch this winter for boys and girls basketball teams. The high-stakes action begins early this season.

Of course things heat up late in the year when teams are trying to punch their ticket to the postseason.

Boys basketball: Somerset Berkley vs. Durfee

Date/ Time: Dec. 13, 6:30 p.m.

The first of two non-league matchups begins on Tuesday when the Raiders and Hilltoppers square off for a battle of last season's playoff teams. It will be the season opener for the Raiders.

Boys basketball: Durfee vs. Brighton at annual Skip Karam Tournament

Date/Time: Dec. 28, 6:30 p.m.

The Hilltoppers host the annual Skip Karam holiday tournament at B.M.C. Durfee High school. Taunton, Dartmouth and Brighton is slated to play games during the two-day event.

Girls basketball: Durfee at Taunton holiday classic tournament

Date/Time: Dec. 29, 3 p.m.

The defending champion HIlltoppers won the first Taunton holiday classic last year and will look to repeat this winter. Taunton High is the host team.

Girls basketball: Diman vs. Joseph Case

Two playoff teams get set to face off in a non-league matchup at Diman Regional Vocational Tech High School. The Cardinals made it as far as the Division IV Sweet 16 last year while the Bengals played a Division III preliminary game against Boston Latin.

Boys basketball: Bishop Connolly at Joseph Case

Date/Time: Jan. 4, 6:30 p.m.

Two Greater Fall River teams looking to make the state tournament this winter. Both the Cougars and Cardinals fell short of the playoff berth.

Girls basketball: Joseph Case at Old Rochester, 6:30 p.m.

Date/Time: Jan. 10, 6:30 p.m.

The Cardinals and Bulldogs will clash in an important South Coast Conference matchup. Both Case and Old Rochester made it to the Sweet 16 round before being eliminated last year.

Boys basketball: Westport vs. West Bridgewater

Date/Time: Jan. 20, 6:30 p.m.

It's always a battle when these two Wildcat teams meet. Westport advanced to the Division V Sweet 16 a season ago while West Bridgewater had a Division III Sweet 16 appearance.

Girls basketball: Somerset Berkley at New Bedford

Date/Time: Jan. 23, 6:30 p.m.

The Raiders travel to the Whaling City to face New Bedford in a key non-league matchup. Somerset Berkley were eliminated from the state tournament last year in the Division II preliminary round.

Girls basketball: Westport at Somerset Berkley

Date/Time: Jan. 30, 6:30 p.m.

A early playoff test for both state tournament teams last season. The Wildcats got to the Division V Round of 32 a season ago while the Raiders punched their ticket to the postseason.
