Want a job in law enforcement? This job fair will have more than 50 NJ agencies on hand

The prosecutor's offices of Bergen, Essex and Hudson counties and seven Essex County law enforcement agencies are among 50 on the federal, state, county and municipal levels that will participate in a recruitment job fair at Kean University in Union this week.

Law enforcement agencies in the state have reported more difficulty in attracting candidates in recent years.

New Jersey State Police report that applications for posts dropped from 12,000 in 2014 to 3,677 in 2021.

Paterson reported in January 2022 that it fell short of its 439-officer goal when five of 28 new recruits were disqualified on the basis of drug tests, and four more could not pass the fitness exam.

“We look forward to being able to continue providing the public with opportunities to learn about and apply for positions in this line of work," said Union County Prosecutor William Daniel. "As we look to diversify the law enforcement community, we welcome all those who are interested in learning more about this rewarding, challenging and purpose-filled career path.”

Who's behind the fair?

The March 8 fair is jointly sponsored by Kean University and the Union County Prosecutor's Office.

Law enforcement partners from federal, state, county and municipal agencies will be in attendance.

Which agencies will participate?

Some of the North Jersey agencies that will participate in the fair include:

  • Prosecutor's Offices: Bergen, Hudson, Essex.

  • Palisades Interstate Parkway Police, based in Alpine.

  • Essex County police departments: Newark, Maplewood, Orange, East Orange, Irvington.

  • Essex County agencies: Alcohol Tobacco Firearms in Newark, Homeland Security Investigations in Newark, Federal Bureau of Investigation in Newark, Essex County Corrections, Newark Bronze Shields, Stevens Institute, New Jersey Institute of Technology.

Other agencies that will participate:

  • Drug Enforcement Administration, U.S. Secret Service, New Jersey Division of Civil Rights, New Jersey State Parole, New Jersey Department of Corrections, Division of Criminal Justice, New Jersey Division of Civil Rights, New Jersey State Police, Port Authority Police Department, Human Services Police, NJ Transit Police, National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives, Muslim American Law Enforcement Association, Hispanic American Law Enforcement Association, Women in Law Enforcement, NAACP, New Jersey Civil Service Commission, Prevention Links.

  • Camden, Somerset, Sussex, Middlesex, Monmouth, and Union Counties.

  • Union County Police Departments/agencies: Union County sheriff, Scotch Plains, Linden, Union County, Westfield, Berkeley Heights, Roselle, Plainfield, Fanwood, Clark, Rahway, Hillside, Kenilworth, New Providence, and Kean University.

  • North Wildwood (Cape May), Franklin Township (Somerset), Rutgers University (Middlesex), Princeton University (Mercer), and Alexandria, Va.

What should applicants bring?

Applicants are encouraged to dress professionally and bring their resumes. Individuals seeking a career as assistant prosecutors will have the opportunity to discuss those careers with current assistant prosecutors and be advised of the process necessary to pursue that position.
